One of the core goals of the Department of Radiation Oncology at UCI is the improvement in the quality of life of every patient. Palliative care means focusing on the symptoms and side effects from cancer and cancer therapy. As oncologists we use radiation therapy for certain patients with the hope to reduce pain, improve breathing, and sustain a life of dignity. In addition, we work closely with the Palliative Care team at UCI to reduce symptom burdens for patients at all stages of their cancer treatment. For patients facing the end of their lives, having early access to palliative care has been shown to improve quality of life, reduce patient and family interpersonal stress, reduce pain, reduce anxiety, and help face the existential stress intertwined with the dying process.
