Radiation therapy uses high energy waves (usually x-rays or electrons) to damage the DNA of cancer cells. With the genetic machinery of the cell damaged beyond repair, cancers are not able to replicate and, therefore, are destroyed. Normal cells can repair themselves, whereas cancer cells cannot. These principles form the crux of how ionizing radiation can be harnessed to fight cancer.
